Common gull (Larus canus) in Poland:
breeds in small numbers on lowlands of the whole country, mainly on the islands of the Vistula river. Nests also on lakes, breeding ponds, reservoirs, gravel-pits, settling tanks and even excavations of the quarries. At the moment breeds almost all around the country, although very irregularly, in some regions only on scattered sites. The most numerous population lives on the Vistula River, between the mouth of the San River and Płock. Recently the number of breeding couples in Poland has been estimated as 3-3,5 thousand. |

During migration periods (II-IV, VII-XI) appears all over Poland. In spring peak in numbers usually happens in March, when in many sites accumulations of a thousand or more birds are observed. Autumn passage, usually longer tham spring one, peaks in end-September or only in November –
accumulations do not exceed 500 birds inland, though usually is much less numerous - especially in the south.
Winters all over Poland, the most abundantly at the coast, while in the southeastern areas exceptionally and rarely. The biggest accumulations are noted in the region of the Gulf of Gdańsk and Western Pomeranian Province. In western and central Poland winters regularly, though in changing numbers, depending on severity of winters. In
the period of 1985-1990 between 7 thousand and over 26 thousand wintering birds were noted in Poland. The most numerous population inland lives at waters that do not freeze and at rivers near big cities.
